City Groups

City Groups gather through the week to know and follow Jesus together in smaller groups. Following the example of the early church, City Groups are devoted to life connections, Bible study, prayer and occasional meals together (Acts 2:42). City Groups are where we relationally can be the church to one another and to our city.

Community together is not our mission. This is the mission–loving one another in Jesus’ name, being witnesses to Jesus (Acts 1:8), and making disciples of Jesus (Matt. 28:16-20). Yet it is in this shared mission that we experience true community together.

This mission happens on Sunday morning, but must extend beyond Sunday morning. It is a joy to gather together on the Lord’s day to sing, to pray, to hear God’s Word and to commune at Christ’s Table. However, the mission extends to the spheres of our everyday life. We all have limited time. We all have relational capacities. Yet we also all have unique gifts, connections and opportunities in God’s providence.

In the life and ministry of Jesus, we see his circles of relationships for mission and community.

  • the “3” – Jesus had closer discipleship with a few, such as Peter, James and John. He also had close friendship to those such as Mary, Martha and Lazarus.
  • the “12” – Jesus called twelve disciples to become apostles. This was his primary group for discipleship.
  • larger groups – Jesus ministered to many others as well, larger groups of disciples (72 in Luke 10 and 120 in Acts 1:15) and larger crowds.

City Groups are a primary context for us to minister and relate at the small group level (the “12”). Closer relationships (the “3”) may even happen within City Groups.
