HOME DEVOTION the week of April 26

As we are learning the grace of Home Worship these past weeks, we also pray that you are experiencing the grace of HOME DEVOTION in these days— daily time in God’s Word in personal devotion and shared time with loved ones.

We have started as a new season together in 1 PETER in a series we’re calling “Scattered Saints.” Here is the big idea of this book: We are scattered to share in the sufferings of Christ and so glorify God.

Here are some suggestions for you to shape and guide your times this week. Aim to do this daily on your own. Aim to share 2 or so times with others such as family, friends or roommates.

1. Continue daily READing in the Psalms – This is the week in which we come to very long Psalm 119. We will break the 176 verses up over three days.

  • Sunday, April 26 – Psalm 117
  • Monday, April 27 – Psalm 118
  • Tuesday, April 28 – Psalm 119:1-64
  • Wednesday, April 29 – Psalm 119:65-120
  • Thursday, April 30 – Psalm 119:121-176
  • Friday, May 1 – Psalm 120
  • Saturday, May 2 – Psalm 121

further study

  • Psalm 119 is the longest Psalm and the longest chapter in the Bible. Read a study Bible’s notes to learn more about its intentional structure.
  • Psalm 120 begins the “Psalms of Ascent” (120-134). Read a study Bible’s notes to learn more about this grouping of Psalms.

2. READ and LISTEN to 1 Peter again in one sitting (2-3 times).

  • Go to 1 Peter on https://www.biblegateway.com. Click the speaker icon for audio reading of Scripture. This is available for most English translations. It takes 16-17 minutes to read/listen to this entire book of the Bible.
  • We encourage you to both read and listen at same time to engage two senses (sight, hearing) for Bible intake and learning.

3. READ Acts 2. Here the apostle Peter preaches a sermon on Pentecost in the power of the Holy Spirit.

  • Do you observe any connection points between this sermon and the letter of his we are now studying (1 Peter)?
  • Both in this sermon and his letter, Peter always references the Old Testament in preaching the gospel. What does this teach us about God’s Word?
  • Those who heard this sermon were cut to the heart (v. 37). What does this teach us about God’s Word?
  • The crowd asks what they are to do, and Peter tells them to repent and be baptized. Have you believed the good news of Jesus? Have you been baptized? How are you being convicted by God’s Spirit to repent of your sin in these days?

4. SING. Find your voice for personal worship or singing with loved ones. Sing of your need for God in these days.
