Easter HOME WORSHIP

Derek Lam

Due to national emergency and state-wide ban on assembly amidst the spread of COVID-19, Citylight is unable to gather for corporate worship on Easter Sunday, April 12, 2020. Instead, we encourage you worship in your home–on your own or with family and friends. Below is a suggested order of worship with prayers, Scripture readings, songs and sermon.

Also, we invite you to join us on Zoom twice this Easter Sunday for times of worship. You can create a FREE account via the Zoom website (https://zoom.us) or app. For meeting link and ID, check Realm (https://onrealm.org/citylight) or email Pastor Derek (dlam@citylightroanoke.com).

  1. EASTER SUNRISE, 6:30-7:15 a.m. – We will meet on Zoom to watch the sunrise together (though cloudy forecast), read Scripture, sing and pray together.
  2. EASTER HOME WORSHIP, 10:00 a.m. – We will meet on Zoom for Scripture and songs before we continue in Home Worship.

Note: Everything is outlined below, including embedded videos for songs and sermon. Scripture readings and song lyrics are also here on a PDF.

CALL TO WORSHIP: Psalm 103 (ESV)

1 Bless the Lord, O my soul,
    and all that is within me,
    bless his holy name!
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
    and forget not all his benefits,
who forgives all your iniquity,
    who heals all your diseases,
who redeems your life from the pit,
    who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
who satisfies you with good
    so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.
The Lord works righteousness
    and justice for all who are oppressed.
He made known his ways to Moses,
    his acts to the people of Israel.
The Lord is merciful and gracious,
    slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
He will not always chide,
    nor will he keep his anger forever.
10 He does not deal with us according to our sins,
    nor repay us according to our iniquities.
11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
    so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;
12 as far as the east is from the west,
    so far does he remove our transgressions from us.
13 As a father shows compassion to his children,
    so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him.
14 For he knows our frame;
    he remembers that we are dust.
15 As for man, his days are like grass;
    he flourishes like a flower of the field;
16 for the wind passes over it, and it is gone,
    and its place knows it no more.
17 But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him,
    and his righteousness to children's children,
18 to those who keep his covenant
    and remember to do his commandments.
19 The Lord has established his throne in the heavens,
    and his kingdom rules over all.
20 Bless the Lord, O you his angels,
    you mighty ones who do his word,
    obeying the voice of his word!
21 Bless the Lord, all his hosts,
    his ministers, who do his will!
22 Bless the Lord, all his works,
    in all places of his dominion.
Bless the Lord, O my soul!

SONG: “The Wonderful Cross” CCLI Song #3148435

Chris Tomlin | Isaac Watts | J. D. Walt | Jesse Reeves | Lowell Mason

VERSE 1:
When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of Glory died
My richest gain I count but loss
And pour contempt on all my pride

VERSE 2:
See from His head, His hands, His feet
Sorrow and love flow mingled down
Did e'er such love and sorrow meet
Or thorns compose so rich a crown

CHORUS:
O the wonderful cross
O the wonderful cross
Bids me come and die and find
That I may truly live
O the wonderful cross
O the wonderful cross
All who gather here by grace
Draw near and bless Your name

VERSE 3:
Were the whole realm of nature mine
That were an offering far too small
Love so amazing so divine
Demands my soul my life my all

CHORUS

ENDING:
Love so amazing so divine
Demands my soul my life my all

SCRIPTURE READING: Psalm 16 (ESV)

1 Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge.
I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
    I have no good apart from you.”
As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones,
    in whom is all my delight.
The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply;
    their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out
    or take their names on my lips.
The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup;
    you hold my lot.
The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
    indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.
I bless the Lord who gives me counsel;
    in the night also my heart instructs me.
I have set the Lord always before me;
    because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.
Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices;
    my flesh also dwells secure.
10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol,
    or let your holy one see corruption.
11 You make known to me the path of life;
    in your presence there is fullness of joy;
    at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

SONG: “Christ Is Risen” CCLI Song #5242683

Matt Maher | Mia Fieldes

VERSE 1:
Let no one caught in sin remain
Inside the lie of inward shame
But fix our eyes upon the cross
And run to Him who showed great love
And bled for us
Freely You've bled for us

CHORUS:
Christ is risen from the dead
Trampling over death by death
Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave
Christ is risen from the dead
We are one with Him again
Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave

VERSE 2:
Beneath the weight of all our sin
You bowed to none but heaven's will
No scheme of hell no scoffer's crown
No burden great can hold You down
In strength You reign
Forever let Your church proclaim

CHORUS

BRIDGE:
O death where is your sting
O hell where is your victory
O church come stand in the light
The glory of God has defeated the night
Singing O death where is your sting
O hell where is your victory
O church come stand in the light
Our God is not dead He's alive He's alive

CHORUS (repeat)

GOD SPEAKS TO US IN HIS WORD

NEW TESTAMENT READING: Luke 24:1-12 (ESV)

1 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.” And they remembered his words, and returning from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10 Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles, 11 but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them. 12 But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home marveling at what had happened.

GOD SENDS US FOR WITNESS AND WORK IN THIS WORLD

______________________________________

SCRIPTURE READING: 1 Peter 1:3-5 (ESV)

have one or more read aloud or read in unison

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

And until the day of Christ’s coming, let us continue to shine the light of Jesus in knowing and following Him.

CLOSING PRAYER:

Thank God for this time of worship this Easter Sunday, and ask Him for blessing into this new week of witness and work, especially in these days of uncertainty and trouble.

ENCOURAGEMENT:

In this day of social distancing, send a text or make a call, encouraging someone today in life and faith. Check in with someone who may be lonely or anxious. If you know someone with a need and you can fill, serve that person in the name of Christ, loving both in word and deed.
