April 4 HOME WORSHIP

Derek Lam

Due to national emergency and state-wide ban on assembly amidst the spread of COVID-19, Citylight is unable to gather for corporate worship on Palm Sunday, April 5, 2020. Instead, we encourage you worship in your home–on your own or with family and friends. Below is a suggested order of worship with prayers, Scripture readings, songs and sermon.

Also we invite you to join us on Zoom at 10:00 a.m. to begin this time of worship. This is first trial for us. We will connect on this video conferencing application for call to worship, a song, prayer and announcements. After this, we encourage you to continue in Home Worship with the resources below.

Note: Everything is outlined below, including embedded videos for songs and sermon. Scripture readings and song lyrics are also here on a PDF.

CALL TO WORSHIP: Psalm 96 (ESV)

1 Oh sing to the Lord a new song;
    sing to the Lord, all the earth!
Sing to the Lord, bless his name;
    tell of his salvation from day to day.
Declare his glory among the nations,
    his marvelous works among all the peoples!
For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised;
    he is to be feared above all gods.
For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols,
    but the Lord made the heavens.
Splendor and majesty are before him;
    strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.
Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples,
    ascribe to the Lord glory and strength!
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
    bring an offering, and come into his courts!
Worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness;
    tremble before him, all the earth!
10 Say among the nations, “The Lord reigns!
    Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved;
    he will judge the peoples with equity.”
11 Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice;
    let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
12     let the field exult, and everything in it!
Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy
13     before the Lord, for he comes,
    for he comes to judge the earth.
He will judge the world in righteousness,
    and the peoples in his faithfulness.

SONG: “How Great Thou Art” CCLI Song #14181 — Stuart Wesley | Keene Hine

VERSE 1:
O Lord my God
When I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds
Thy hands have made
I see the stars
I hear the rolling thunder
Thy pow'r thru'out
The universe displayed

CHORUS:
Then sings my soul
My Savior God to Thee
How great Thou art
How great Thou art
Then sings my soul
My Savior God to Thee
How great Thou art
How great Thou art

VERSE 2:
When through the woods
And forest glades I wander
And hear the birds
Sing sweetly in the trees
When I look down
From lofty mountain grandeur
And hear the brook
And feel the gentle breeze

VERSE 3:
And when I think
That God His Son not sparing
Sent Him to die
I scarce can take it in
That on the cross
My burden gladly bearing
He bled and died
To take away my sin

VERSE 4:
When Christ shall come
With shout of acclamation
And take me home
What joy shall fill my heart
Then I shall bow
In humble adoration
And there proclaim
My God how great Thou art

GOD SPEAKS TO US IN HIS WORD

OLD TESTAMENT READING: Micah 4:6-8 (ESV)

have one or more read aloud

6 In that day, declares the Lord,
    I will assemble the lame
and gather those who have been driven away
    and those whom I have afflicted;
7 and the lame I will make the remnant,
    and those who were cast off, a strong nation;
and the Lord will reign over them in Mount Zion
    from this time forth and forevermore.
8 And you, O tower of the flock,
    hill of the daughter of Zion,
to you shall it come,
    the former dominion shall come,
    kingship for the daughter of Jerusalem.

OLD TESTAMENT READING: Zechariah 9:9-13 (ESV)

have one or more read aloud

9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
    Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your king is coming to you;
    righteous and having salvation is he,
humble and mounted on a donkey,
    on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
10 I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim
    and the war horse from Jerusalem;
and the battle bow shall be cut off,
    and he shall speak peace to the nations;
his rule shall be from sea to sea,
    and from the River to the ends of the earth.
11 As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant with you,
    I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit.
12 Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope;
    today I declare that I will restore to you double.
13 For I have bent Judah as my bow;
    I have made Ephraim its arrow.
I will stir up your sons, O Zion,
    against your sons, O Greece,
    and wield you like a warrior's sword.

NEW TESTAMENT READING: Luke 19:28-44 (ESV)

28 And when he had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.29 When he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olivet, he sent two of the disciples, 30 saying, “Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’” 32 So those who were sent went away and found it just as he had told them. 33 And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34 And they said, “The Lord has need of it.”35 And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. 36 And as he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road. 37 As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, 38 saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” 39 And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” 40 He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”

41 And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, 42 saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. 43 For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side 44 and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”

SERMON:

A note from Pastor Christian: I apologize that my message ends abruptly.  My phone must have run out of space as I had it on a high resolution mode.  Just a couple of words to end my message:

  • Obviously, my prayer was cut off.  I encourage you to respond to Jesus’ Lordship in prayer and to renew your allegiance to Him as your King.  If you want to and are physically able to, you can bow your knees and invite Him to be your King.  As Psalm 24 says, you can open your gates (heart) to Him.
  • Also, I made a comment at the end of my message that as families, you could easily reenact this passage.  Find some (palm) branches, get some coats or jackets and lay them on the floor.  Have daddy be the donkey and let the children ride through the gates into the city while the rest shout ‘Hosanna, blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.’  Just an idea for an activity with the kids.

GOD CALLS US TO RESPONSE

SONG: “Come Behold The Wondrous Mystery” CCLI Song # 7026028 — Matt Boswell | Matt Papa | Michael Bleecker

VERSE 1:
Come behold the wondrous myst'ry
In the dawning of the King
He the theme of heaven's praises
Robed in frail humanity
In our longing in our darkness
Now the light of life has come
Look to Christ who condescended
Took on flesh to ransom us

VERSE 2:
Come behold the wondrous myst'ry
He the perfect Son of Man
In His living in His suff'ring
Never trace nor stain of sin
See the true and better Adam
Come to save the hell-bound man
Christ the great and sure fulfillment
Of the law in Him we stand

VERSE 3:
Come behold the wondrous myst'ry
Christ the Lord upon the tree
In the stead of ruined sinners
Hangs the Lamb in victory
See the price of our redemption
See the Father's plan unfold
Bringing many sons to glory
Grace unmeasured love untold

VERSE 4:
Come behold the wondrous myst'ry
Slain by death the God of life
But no grave could e'er restrain Him
Praise the Lord He is alive
What a foretaste of deliv'rance
How unwavering our hope
Christ in power resurrected
As we will be when He comes

I see a generation
Rising up to take their place
With selfless faith
With selfless faith

VERSE 4:
I see a near revival
Stirring as we pray and seek
We're on our knees
We're on our knees

CHORUS

Heal my heart and make it clean
Open up my eyes to the things unseen
Show me how to love like You have loved me

GOD SENDS US FOR WITNESS AND WORK IN THIS WORLD

SCRIPTURE READING: Psalm 24 (ESV)

have one or more read aloud or read in unison

1 The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof,
    the world and those who dwell therein,
2 for he has founded it upon the seas
    and established it upon the rivers.
3 Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord?
    And who shall stand in his holy place?
4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart,
    who does not lift up his soul to what is false
    and does not swear deceitfully.
5 He will receive blessing from the Lord
    and righteousness from the God of his salvation.
6 Such is the generation of those who seek him,
    who seek the face of the God of Jacob.   Selah
7 Lift up your heads, O gates!
    And be lifted up, O ancient doors,
    that the King of glory may come in.
8 Who is this King of glory?
    The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle!
9 Lift up your heads, O gates! And lift them up, O ancient doors,
    that the King of glory may come in.
10 Who is this King of glory?
    The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory!   Selah

CLOSING PRAYER:

Thank God for this time of worship, and ask Him for blessing into this new week of witness and work, especially in these days of uncertainty and trouble.

ENCOURAGEMENT:

In this day of social distancing, send a text or make a call, encouraging someone today in life and faith. Check in with someone who may be lonely or anxious. If you know someone with a need and you can fill, serve that person in the name of Christ, loving both in word and deed.
