breaking bread

In the book of Acts, Luke records that the early church devoted itself to “the breaking of bread” (Acts 2:42, 46). This should not be surprising as Jesus gave this example to his followers – sharing meals in the sharing of his life. In his Gospel, Luke recounts many occasions in which Jesus broke bread with others.

Having a meal is an ordinary activity for everyday life, but sharing a meal with others is a way to show gladness and generosity. Breaking bread is a simple way to deepen relationships with the gifts of God in the purposes of God. And so into this new year, our resolution as a church is not to eat less, but to eat with people more… devoting ourselves to the breaking of bread.
