Anchor Of The Soul (square)In chapter 9, the writer of Hebrews continues his exposition of Jesus’ fulfillment and superiority of the old covenant. In the shedding of Christ’ blood in the sacrifice of himself, we now have forgiveness from sin (9:22), a conscience purified from dead works to serve the living God (9:14).

Discussion Questions

Personal Understanding

  • Let’s say one of your non-Christian friends ask you, “You go to church, but it is not like the Tabernacle or Temple of the Bible. What was the point of those and why are they not around today?” How do you respond?
  • Your friend then continues, “What was the point of all the killing and sacrifices of animals in the Old Testament?” How do you answer?
  • Your friend follows-up, “I often hear Christians talk about the blood of Jesus. The cross seems gruesome and sad to me, and yet it is the central symbol of your faith. Why do you guys emphasize Jesus’ death?” How do you respond?
Personal Application
  • Verse 14 says “how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.”
  • In our conscience we can both justify our sin and so cheapen the grace of God. Or we can condemn ourselves and not believe the truth of the Gospel. Which are you prone to do?  What is the truth of this Scripture and how should it be applied to your life in Christ?
