Introduction

  • Anchor Of The Soul (square)It is likely that this book was a 1st century sermon to 2nd generation believers facing a crisis of faith. They knew the ancient Scriptures, even as they lived in a progressive Greco-Roman culture. Why is it fitting for us to read and study this book right now in this season?
  • In Hebrews 1, the writer describes how Jesus is higher than the angels in enthronement. In Hebrews 2, the writer shares how Jesus was made a little lower than the angels in incarnation. How was the message of a suffering Savior and crucified Lord offensive in the first century? How is it offensive today?
Hebrews 2:10 – Jesus’ suffering for us
  • We are all glory-seekers, but we all seek it differently. How do you seek glory?  Through ambition or through comfort and isolation?
  • What was Jesus’ pathway to glory? How does this qualify him as the trailblazer/founder of our salvation?
  • What does it mean that Jesus was made perfect in suffering? What does this not mean?
  • Looking back to last week’s passage as well (2:5-9), does Jesus’ suffering cause you to love him more? How does it motivate you to love others more in the midst of suffering?
Hebrews 2:11-13 – Jesus’ solidarity with us
  • The writer here quotes Psalm 22 in verse 12. What is significant about this Psalm?
  • Jesus is not ashamed to call us brothers and sisters in the family of God. How does Jesus both comfort and convict you as you relate to God and to others? Who are those in your life that you tend to be ashamed of or avoid?
Hebrews 2:14-16 – Jesus sharing with us
  • Jesus, the Son of God, is also fully human, sharing in flesh and blood with us, partaking of the same things that we do. What are some of the things that most amaze and encourage you about this?
  • What are two purposes of Jesus’ incarnation identified here in verses 14-15. What hope and confidence does this give you in following Jesus?
Hebrews 2:17-18 – Jesus’ service for us
  • Because Jesus suffered when tempted, he can help us in our temptation (Read also Hebrews 4:15). Does this give you hope and confidence for something you’re facing right now?
  • Who are the people that you can now help because Jesus has helped you in your life difficulties and temptations?
