Anchor Of The Soul (square)JESUS AND ANGELS. Relationship (Jesus is God’s Son, angels are not. 1:5)
  • Jesus is the Son of God in a way no angel ever was or is. This passage links Psalm 2:7 and 2 Samuel 7:14.
  • Can you give examples of angels appearing in the Old Testament?  What was their role?
  • Read Matthew 3:16-17 and this verse.  What do you notice about the Fatherhood of God?  What kind of Father is he?  What does that mean to you personally?
JESUS AND ANGELS. Worship (Jesus is God. Angels worship him. 1:6-7)
  • Jesus is not an angel, he is worshipped by the angels. This passage cites Psalm 97:7 and/or Deuteronomy 32:43, and Psalm 104:4.
  • What do you think the term, “firstborn” means in this passage?
  • Worship cascades up to the highest power, greatest love, purest being.  In other words, what you love the most is what you worship.  What competes for the worship of Jesus in your own heart?
JESUS AND ANGELS. Position (Jesus is enthroned King. Angels are not. 1:8-13)
  • Jesus is not an angel, he is God and the Creator of all things. This passage cites Psalm 45:6-7, Psalm 102:25-27, and Psalm 110:1.
  • This passage shows us the passionate emotion of Jesus, loving righteousness, and hating wickedness—and because of this, he is forever glad.  Contrast this with the emotional state of our culture, or even yourself.  Do you really love righteousness?  Do you really hate wickedness?
JESUS, ANGELS AND US (1:14)
  • Jesus is seated on the throne and angels are dispatched to do the King’s bidding.
  • We always want everything to be about us, but we are only mentioned briefly in the last verse of this passage.  All of history and all of eternity is about the excellency, superiority, and exaltation of Christ Jesus. What do you think about that?  Do you struggle with it, or do you find peace in it?
  • We all have faced, are facing, or will face suffering and trials of many kinds.  How does this chapter bring you comfort?
  • As we’ve gone through this first chapter, what is the Holy Spirit revealing to you about yourself?  Is there something that needs to change in you?
