The Gospel of John

Starting Sunday, September 21, we will begin a new season of life and study together through the Gospel of John. This beloved book of the Bible was written by the beloved disciple of the Lord Jesus, John. A fisherman by trade with his brother, James, John followed Jesus for three years in shared life and close discipleship. He was the only one of the Twelve that remained at the cross of Jesus’ crucifixion. He was the one who outran Peter to Jesus’ empty tomb, and he was the apostle of the early church who lived the longest into old age.

From John’s Gospel come some of the most widely known and beloved texts of the Holy Scriptures, but John’s ultimate intention in writing is “that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (20:31). This is not some lifestyle for worldly fulfillment, but rather this life is the revelation of Christ Jesus for our salvation, relationship with him now and forever.

1:4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men.

3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

5:21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will.

6:47 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life.

10:10 I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

11:25 I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live,

14:6 I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
